Kurapika‘s Trans Coding
*I use he/him and they/them pronouns for Kurapika interchangeably throughout this post.
1. Starting off, Kurapika is often seen to be wearing what looks like a binder or sport’s bra throughout the series (1999 and 2011).

2. Throughout the series, Kurapika is the only main character whose bare chest is never shown. In the manga cover of the 14th tankobon, in which Kurapika appears naked, his chest is purposefully left blank and featureless.
Adding on to the point on how Kurapika’s bare chest is never shown, here’s this manga illustration where the main four are shown at the beach. Kurapika is the only one who’s wearing a tank top and has their chest covered.
3. This is from an official hxh factbook which states, “throughout the series, Kurapika’s gender is never made clear”.
4. In this art, Kurapika is seen wearing a necklace with both male and female symbols. Although often used as a symbol for heterosexuality, it could also be used to convey being of the “third gender” or being outside of the gender binary.
5. During the Yorknew City Arc, Kurapika kidnaps Chrollo. Some information that we gather from this:
- Kurapika chose to disguise themself with a more feminine appearance (knowing that he could easily blend as someone perceived to be a woman while the Troupe was looking for a man).
- He seems comfortable wearing feminine clothing around his friends.
- They tell Chrollo to not assume his gender solely based on appearance.
6. Trouble Quartet was an unpublished sports manga featuring queer relationships and gender non-conforming athletes that Togashi was developing in the summer of 1990, prior to Yu Yu Hakusho (which came into existence later that year). Gen Otoda, the main character of Togashi’s manga, has a similar character design to Kurapika.

I used to do community service at a community breakfast, we’d go to the local Safeway and get all their stale bread, the local bakery for their stale baked goods and whatnot.
